A Somalian pirate attack has been thwarted by Swedish & Dutch warships this Wednesday.
The thwarted pirate attack was against a 14-sailor Indian vessel. NATO and EU responded to the pirate threat and thwarted the attack from the pirates.
The Indian dhow sent out a distress call to the Swedish & Dutch warships, naming that they are under attack by 12 armed pirates, asking for help.
The 12 pirates, when they were encountered by the anti-piracy vessels, abandoned the Indian cargo vessel at the shore in the middle of the night at a Somali shore. The Royal Swedish Navy warship HSwMS Carlskrona and Dutch warship HNLMS Van Speijk successfully thwarted the pirate attack.
As pirate attacks are thwarted, the global economy has been doing better. $6 billion alone has been lost in 2012 due to pirate attacks on cargo ships and other vessels.
Somali pirates had once attacked dozens of ships and kidnapped hundreds of people.
The EU Naval Forces hasn't come across any successful ship hijacking since May 2012. There had been 4 incidents all of which has been unsuccessful.
Who knew that pirates still roam the sea and attack ships? I guess Pirates of the Caribbean is not that far from reality.
