Britain Three-Parent IVF: What It Might Mean To the Future Of Humanity (REPORT)
By Jobs & Hire Staff Reporter | Jun 28, 2013 03:19 PM EDT
Britain's 'Three-Parent' IVF will open the world to the first genetically engineered babies, whose DNA passed down from their mother will be modified so as to eliminate diseases caused by imperfections in the mitochondrial DNA.
Ethnical powerhouses of the Human Genetics Alert, David King, however, is warning the public that "the techniques are unnecessary and their use is ethically unsound. They cross the ethical line that has been agreed by government around the world that we should not genetically alter human beings."
The genetic alterations to the three-parent IVF conceived babies might spark numerous other artificial DNA modifications to begin to enhance babies genetically.
These babies, rumored to be called "designer babies", might contain genetic makeup that would ensure certain traits, such as height, or eye color. If Britain's 'Three-Parent' IVF is legalized, it will pave the road to Build-A-Bear style conception services.
Pro-life campaign supporters have already generated criticism for the scientific research, voicing that embryonic children created in labs is a type of abuse due to the unnatural growth process that is forced upon the children. Additionally, the scientists will very likely not be able to reverse the effects of their experimentation once they have performed the potentially harmful operations.
The emergence of "designer babies" would likely create conflicts due to the probable unequal distribution of the genetic enhancements. As popular science fiction has always predicted (Fringe, Gattaca, V), such genetic experimentation may lead to harmfully unpredictable futures where genetically enhanced people would discriminate against the normally conceived. 'Specieism' might emerge as the next round of social economical discrimination, and would likely spark wars and nullify peace if it emerges.
The final decision to the regulations of Britain's 'Three-Parent' IVF would be voted upon by the parliament.
