The "Warcraft" movie has become quite the box office hit in China. It garnered about $156 million during its opening weekend.
Deadline reported that the "Warcraft" movie box office in China has earned $156 million (1.024 billion rmb). It has taken over the record of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" with its 996 million rmb last year.
The "Warcraft" movie also set the box office record of hitting 1 billion rmb in just a matter of 114 hours. It beat "Furious 7" with 120 hours.
Legendary is distributing the film in China through the China Film Group and Huaxia. Universal is distributing it in other parts of the world.
On Sunday, the "Warcraft" movie box office in China garnered $11.2 million. It accounted for 74.5 percent of the total Chinese box office of the day.
"The Conjuring 2" comes in second place. It earned $50 million in its international debut in 44 market.
According to Variety, the "Warcraft" movie box office opened with a whopping $46 million on Wednesday. IMAX got $5.3 million in ticket sales due to the film as well.
Jackie Chan shared his thoughts on the "Warcraft" movie's success in the Chinese box office. The action star commended the country's market power at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Chan noted that China has been overlooked as a "nothing market" throughout the years. This time, though, the world has finally seen the country's value for the entertainment sector. He even cited the "Warcraft" movie's box office success in the Middle Kingdom.
"'Warcraft' made 600 million RMB ($91 million) in two days - this has scared the Americans," he said. "If we can make a film that earns 10 billion ($1.5 billion), then people from all over the world who study film will learn Chinese, instead of us learning English."
China is becoming the world's largest theatrical market. There are expectations that the country could overtake North America in 2017.
