"Penny Dreadful" was a British-American horror drama television series that premiered on Showtime on May 11, 2014, the first in an eight-episode season. It focused on the British and Irish fiction surrounding penny dreadfuls, including Dorian Gray. After three seasons, the last episode of "Penny Dreadful season 3"aired on June 19, 2016, series creator John Logan announced that Penny Dreadful had officially ended.
Fans were disappointed to hear the abrupt cancellation of the show. But show runner John Logan explains the reason behind the end of "Penny Dreadful."
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Logan said they knew about it halfway through the second season, which was two years ago. The Verge has it that Eva Green's character, Vanessa, lost her faith and found it again after sacrificing herself. That was the official ending to the series which centered around her journey of faith.
Logan had to convince the rest of the crew that the particular "Penny Dreadful season 3" finale was the right move for Eva Green's character. David Nevins, Showtime's producer, executive and president said, "John convinced me that this was the right end, and the right time to end." He goes on to say that - "It gives closure to Vanessa Ives, and without Vanessa Ives, the show shouldn't go on."
"Eva Green really is my muse, and I set out to write a story about a very complicated character that I love deeply," said Logan to Variety. "I'm deeply invested in that character... that became the show for me. To continue it past Vanessa's death would be, for me, an act of bad faith."
When the finale episode of "Penny Dreadful season 3" aired, it was revealed that the show's ending was a surprise. Nevins explained that spilling the beans on the finale would be a "massive spoiler."
Logan wanted to give justice to the character as well as the utmost respect for "Penny Dreadful" fans.
