After months of speculation, Lucasfilm confirmed that "Community" actor Donald Glover is set to play the part of young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo standalone "Star Wars" film, Friday.
Glover, who is known for his role as Troy Barnes on the NBC sitcom, will be joining actor Alden Ehrenreich, who has been cast as young Han Solo. In an official statement released by the film studio, Glover will be playing Lando before he rose to power as the baron of the Cloud City and became the general in the Rebel Alliance.
The still untitled film will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. In casting Glover, Lord and Miller said in a statement, "We're so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we'd like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever." snare
According to Deadline, the upcoming film follows Han Solo's life before the events that unfold in the 1977's "Star Wars" film. Although the film studio has not released further details on the film's plot, it is speculated that it will feature some of his backstories that were mentioned in the Star Wars Expanded Universe materials. It will most likely highlight his days before he got involved in the rebel alliance. Plus, it may feature his loyal friend and co-pilot Chewbacca.
The standalone film is expected to hit theaters on May 25, 2018 and its possible film title is "Han Solo: A Star Wars Story."
Meanwhile, the epic space opera franchise is focusing on releasing the next film, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," on Dec. 16. It will be the first stand-alone film on the "Star Wars Anthology's" roster.
