Rumors to a trade-off were confirmed Monday when the Seattle Seahawks traded guard John Motfitt to the Cleveland Browns. In exchange of John Motfitt, Brian Sanford is expected to add to the strength of Seahawks defense team. The transaction which was first reported on CBS Sports were confirmed by both teams.
The trade confirmed that the Seahawks no longer saw the twenty-six year-old guard as third-round material like he used to when he was picked out of Wisconsin two years ago as he showed promise as a rookie. Before the season ended in 2011 and after nine games, he suffered a knee injury. However he recovered to start six games in the previous season.
Motfitt made news outside the sports industry when he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct that involved three incidents in Bellevue Square. These incidents included urinating in public.
Motfitt, in a radio interview, says that he is not taking the trade personally and that he has no bad feelings with regard the trade. "It showed that at the end of the day it's a business. It's money, it's X's and O's. It's who can you get and who is worth what," he said.
The twenty-five year old Brian Sanford who played for the Browns for three years signed to Cleveland's practice squad for the 2010 season. He also spent the first half of last year's season on Brown's practice squad before he was signed to the active roster in October.
Along with this trade between the Seahawks and the Browns, Seahawks decided to sign Dewayne Cherrington, a six feet three inch free agent that would help strengthen their defensive lane. Cherrington played for Mississippi State and was called for a tryout for Seahawks days before the trade. Cherrington is set to take the place of Carson Wiggs, a free agent kicker that Seahawks waived.
