The Holy Father of the Catholic Church has expressed his disgust for journalists and people in the media that connive to deliver fake news and lies. Pope Francis said that writing and delivering unfounded information purposely to defame and destroy the image and reputation of an individual is a grave sin.
The Pontiff compares corrupt and lying journalists to coprophagic, or people who eat excrement. Those who consume the fake news are sick of coprophilia or those with intense desire to eat feces.
The Head of the Vatican apologized for his striking words but he needs to rebuke the people vending lies in the media. The priest has observed how politics in the U.S. has been manipulated by the media. Politicians smear fellow politicians in order to run ahead in popularity.
The Guardian reported that this is not the first time Pope Francis talked about false news delivered by the media. In La Stampa, an Italian newspaper, he has warned journalists not to lie about the information they give out to the public. He calls those who feed the public with fake news as sinners. He also said in a Belgian Catholic publication, Tertio that people in the media must always be transparent and truthful.
Celebrity news, particularly in Hollywood is filled with hearsays, lies, defamation and false reports. The media is used to build up or tear down the reputation of a particular celebrity. Death hoaxes are oftentimes peddled by the lying press for money or to draw viewers to their sites.
