Entertainment Weekly has chosen Ryan Reynolds as its 2016 Entertainer of the Year. This caps Reynold's year of great accomplishments in his career.
Entertainment Weekly made the announcement with Executive Editor Sean Smith explained in a video that Reynolds was chosen because he had a great year, mainly due to his awesome performance as Deadpool, redefining superheroes. Smith also said that "After 20 years in the business, he has proven that things really do get better with age and we're thrilled to be giving him this honor this year." Smith added, "We're not the only ones are high on Ryan this year, he is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame which is fantastic and long overdue."
In response, Reynolds quipped "I hate to sound overly sentimental, but I had a good year." Aside from this recognition by EW, Global News reports that he has also been nominated for Best Actor in an Action Movie, Best Actor in a Comedy by the Critics' Choice Awards.
"Deadpool" was Reynold's passion project for 11 years. His efforts, out-of-the-box campaigns (which included an ad for awareness on prostate cancer) and embodiment of the antihero resulted in the highest-grossing X-Men universe film of all time, earning $783 million worldwide. In an earlier interview with EW, Rhett Reese, the film's co-writer mused, "Ryan was born to play Deadpool... But I think Deadpool was also born to play Ryan."
On the home front, Reynolds and his wife, Blake Lively, expanded their family in September with the birth of their second daughter. "I have great kids under 2, so that's the kind of stuff you focus on... The rest of the year they're dead to me," joked the 40-year old actor.
Lively is set to accompany Reynolds when he receives his award on Dec. 11.
