A snake was found in a San Antonio Starbucks bathroom on Tuesday, CNN reported Thursday.
A man was shocked to find a snake crawling on top of a toilet in a San Antonio Starbucks bathroom, where he had decided to stop by after a business presentation.
Bruce Ahlswede froze and quietly pondered whether the snake was simply a toy left by a prankster lying across the toilet seat. It was only after it began to move that Bruce stepped backwards out of the bathroom and managed to find a store employee.
"I said 'Hey you've got a snake in your bathroom and she's kind of freaking out,' " Ahlswede said to CNN affiliate KSAT.
Bruce's wife, Michelle, and the rest of the store employees immediately crowded the bathroom to view the snake slither around the toilet bowl and suddenly disappeared.
Ahlswede's wife however managed to take a photo of the snake and promptly uploaded it to her Facebook account. "It had to have crawled up the pipes," Michele wrote on her page. "I have heard of it happening but have never seen it in person. Its a python guess he like coffee also (sic)."
Meanwhile, a snake expert told KSAT that it was merely a non-poisonous rat snake.
According to a statement from the University of Austin Amphibian and Reptile Diversity Research Center, rat snakes are similar in appearance to pythons that commonly reach 7 feet in length, adding that such type of snakes poses no threat to humans.
"A lot of people were really freaked out and some said 'thanks a lot," Michelle said.
KSAT stated that South Texas Herpetology Association responded to the Starbuck's branch as requested, and then the San Antonio Starbuck's branch issued a statement saying that the store is completely safe, despite the snake Ahlswede found was not yet caught.
Bruce and Michelle said that although the snake encounter was a seemingly shocking experience, they are still to remain loyal as Starbuck's customers.
Michelle even quipped that from now on she will be double-checking every toilet just in case a new snake comes out.
