Response proved positive for Apple’s new Iphone 5S when sales on its first weekend out proved to be extremely strong. However, the same cannot be said for Apple’s lower priced model, the Iphone 5C, and it isn’t clear if the product will do well or not.

These conclusions came in after sales for the two handsets came in at about 9 million, an amount that went beyond analyst’s expectations.

Besides reporting its weekend sales, Apple also announced that its quarterly sales and profit margin are expected to be higher compared to their previous forecast. Back in July of this year, Apple projected a 34 to 37 billion revenue and a gross margin between 36% and 37%.

There was also positive response to the release of the new IOS 7, with Apple reporting that over 200 million of their devices already running the new operating system.

Compared to the 5 million Iphone units that sold at its release a year ago, one can conclude that this release’s sales ultimately fared better. While analysts only predicted sales to reach 6 million to 7 million units, actual sales surpassed those figures by a cool 2 million.

The difference may have been the Apple’s decision to sell their newest phone to the China market on opening weekend. The company has not done so in the past.

Besides sales that were recorded on their own websites and actual stores, Apple also included sales they made to other third-party retailers. And while there seems to be no more IPhone 5S supplies left, the reported 9 million sold units also include many unsold Iphone 5C units at non-Apple stores.

A number of analysts have said that the blowout in sales isn’t really what it seems. An estimated 3 to 4 million Iphone 5C units are still in store, despite them being non-Apple stores, so realistically, the number of actual sold IPhones really stand somewhere at 5.5 million units.

However, Apple didn’t really break down their sales except to say that the demand for their Iphone 5S units greatly exceeded supply.
