At least 50 people have been reported to have died resulting from a deadly 7.7 earthquake that hit a remote area of Pakistan called Balochistan.

Local officials have said that the quake struck on 4:29 P.M. Pakistan time. The quake also ran a depth of 20 km, 66 km north east of Awaran, in an area known as the Balochistan province.

Aftershock tremors from the quake were felt in other parts of the country such as Karachi and Hyderabad. Even India's capital, Delhi, reportedly felt some aftershocks.

The earthquake also seemed to affect the water as witnesses claim that after it happened, a small island near the Gwadar port suddenly appeared.

Crowds gathered to get a view of the new island that made an appearance, which was estimated to be about 30 feet high and about a hundred meters long.

Balochistan has apparently been always earthquake prone. This may be the reason as to why, despite being Pakistan's biggest province, it is also the least populated one. The last tremor in the area was believed to have stemmed from Iran's 7.8 quake that occurred in April of this year. That aftershock also managed to kill about 35 residents of Balochistan.

Currently, The Pakistan Frontier Corps are deep into their search and rescue efforts. Although the death toll was originally reported at 50, a spokesperson for the country's National Disaster Management Authority said they are expecting that number to rise.

Most of the casualties were said to be a result of mud houses collapsing. Many residents are feared to be trapped under rubble of these mud houses.

Reports of about 30% of mud houses collapsing in the Awaran district have come in. Other districts have also had reports of collapsed houses. While other areas may have also suffered serious damage, the remoteness of these districts have made assessment very difficult.
