U.S Government workers, lawmakers and other witnesses saw a dramatic high speed car chase through the streets of Washington near the U.S. capitol that ended with suspect shot dead. Police are positive that this is not just an accident.
It was like a scene from an action movie with swerving cars, running all the red lights, squeaking ties and gunshots. Witnessing the incident firsthand stunned citizens and tourists - who were pushed into Lafayette Park for safety. The White House ordered everyone to not leave the building.
This happened while the Congress was just finishing voting for the day and most legislators are clearing out. They rushed back into the building and security in chambers was tightened.
The black sedan smashed into one of the cruisers, did a 180 and took off around the south wing of the Capitol. Policemen flashed red lights as they sped down the Constitution Ave. to give the suspect chase. Even with gunshots being fired at her car, the 34-year old woman continued to drive across Capitol Hill before being halted near the Supreme Court building located at the eastern section of the capitol.
"The suspect in the vehicle was struck by gunfire and at this point has been pronounced (dead)," Washington's police chief, Cathy Lanier, told reporters.
The authorities searched the car and found no gun inside. License plate was traced to Connecticut.
"I got that from multiple sources - that they think she may have had some mental health issues," he said. "Obviously the way she responded at the gate near the White House and then turning around and hitting Secret Service."
At the moment, investigators are now searching a home in Connecticut and interviewing the neighborhood to possibly get more clues as to why the woman rammed a barricade and when stopped, rushed away.
1-Year Old Baby Rescued
Little did the Capitol Police know that there is a 1-year old baby girl inside the black sedan that rammed into a barricade at the 15th Street and Pennsylvania Ave. near the White House. The baby, who was identified to be the daughter of the suspect, was immediately brought to the hospital.
There was another incident of shooting near the U.S. capitol (Washington Navy Yard) three weeks ago when a government contractor open fired that left 12 victims dead and 3 others injured.
A stressful week at the Washington amidst government shutdown ended with another tension.
