A reported brush fire at Camp Pendleton has destroyed about 250 acres. The fire has forced nearby residents of a housing area and patients in a base hospital to evacuate.

All patients from the 61-bed capacity were transferred in Oceanside's Tri-City Medical Center and San Diego's Naval Medical Center after a power outage affected the building.

By 6 p.m. on the same day, 17 patients were successfully relocated to San Diego hospital, and another five to Tri-city.

The base hospital functions as a care unit for those that reside in the base. The hospital usually treats marines and sailors that may have sustained injuries from combat. Other marines who may need more specialized and more advanced care are taken to the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.

The brush fire started at around 12:45 p.m. at the Lake O'Neil area. About 230 residents were immediately evacuated to the Paige field house. The hospital is located within very close proximity to where the fire started.

While the four buildings in the area reportedly have minor damage, there have been no injuries resulting from the brush fire.

200 firefighters have already been dispatched from the Camp Pendleton Fire Department and the California Department of Forestry and Fire protection. Five helicopters and six air tankers assisted the firefighters as they tried to control the blaze.

Smoke was seen from locations such as Interstate 5 and even some parts of northern San Diego county. However, officials have reassured some worried residents of Fallbrook that so far, there seems to be no imminent threat or danger to their community. Fallbrook is the closest civilian community to the proximity of the fire.

As for now, the fire was said to be about 15% contained. There have been no estimates as to when the fire may be completely contained.
