Thanks to an online petition done by Park Ridge residents New Jersey now officially celebrates 'James Gandolfini Day', a celebration of the life and memory of the Sopranos actor.
December 1 marked the inauguration of the 'James Gandolfini Day' in Park Ridge, Gandolfini's hometown. The event was held in one of the actors usual haunt spots, the Ridge Diner. Hundreds of people attended the ceremony including his Sopranos co-stars Tony Sirico, Vincent Curatola, Steve Schirripa, Dominic Chianese and Vincent Pastore. Also in attendance was the TV show director, Timothy Van Patten.
James Gandolfini died due to a heart attack while vacationing with son, Michael in Italy back in June. The well-loved actor was called the "Son of Park Ridge" by Mayor Terence Mcguire and a Park Avenue swath was also renamed "James Gandolfini Way" as another tribute to the Park Ridge native.
Also at the ceremony, Michael, 14, who was with his father before he died fondly recalled how his father would take him to the Ridge Diner, talk about his adventures and remind him of his Jersey lineage. Even among his friends, Gandolfini was always remembered to be in touch with his roots no matter how famous he became.
James Gandolfini was best known for his role as Tony Soprano in the award-winning HBO series, The Sopranos. Playing the role of a troubled Mafia leader the actor has won three Emmy awards and one Golden Globe for his portrayal of the role.
He also starred in True Romance as a Mob henchman among his other notable roles.
