Dhoom 3 has only been released a few days and it had already climbed the charts to debut at number nine with its US$3.3 million estimate in box office sales. The movie had an amazing US$14,000 sales average per theater.
Last Friday's worldwide premiere of Dhoom 3 showed the biggest ever release for a Hindi film in the United States, with the movie shown in 236 theaters nationwide. The Indian film climbed up into the top 10 chart during the very first week of its release, exceeding critics' expectations.
The number one spot in North America was grabbed by "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug" which amassed a total of US$31.3 million in its third consecutive weekend. The second installment of "The Hobbit" saga has remained in the top spot for three weeks since its release and has garnered a staggering US$403 million in the U.S. alone.
The movie has grossed aroun US$900 to 950 million worldwide to date.
Dhoom 3's opening week results remains a career high for all the lead actors of the movie, however the succeeding two weeks will determine whether it will beat Aamir Khan's first U.S. hit, "3 Idiots." "3 Idiots" amassed a historic gross sales of US$6.5 million in North America during its release.
Typically, even popular Bollywood movies' sales drop around 60 percent in the following week. This does not seem to be the case for Dhoom 3 however, as the movie is said to have amazing word of mouth and repeat value. A majority of Dhoom 3's viewers who have watched the film on Friday have voiced their intentions to see the film again around Christmas time.
"I saw the film the first show the first day," shared one student from Harrison, New Jersey. "Out of the theatre, I was busy calling over a dozen friends what a fabulous time pass film it is and many of us decided to join me after couple of days."
Considering the fact that majority of foreign students in the U.S. are on a controlled budget, they only tend to watch films that are worth investing on.
Dhoom 3 has theaters nationwide selling out tickets by Saturday, owing to word of mouth.
Aamir Khan's Dhoom 3 has done exceedingly well worldwide as well, with early statistics showing it has amassed a good US$8.5 million in the three days of its release.
The final test for the sales-garnerning ability of Dhoom 3 is to beat the US$23 million Bollywood hit "My Name Is Khan."
