JonBenet Ramsey continues to make headlines even after her passing 17 years ago. That is because the killing of the 6-year-old beauty pageant queen still remains to be unsolved and is now considered a cold case, authorities said Thursday.

According to UPI, JonBenet Ramsey's killing remains to be a mystery. It can be noted that JonBenet's parents reportedly woke up on Dec. 26, 1996 claiming that their daughter was missing and a ransom note was left saying the 6-year-old had been kidnapped.

However, hours later, JonBenet's body was found in a basement room in her parent's home, strangled to death. The bizarre case has led to an investigation, but arrests were not made.

Boulder, Colorado Police chief Mark Beckner said that the young girl's case is currently considered cold, KMGH-TV, Denver reported.

"The case is still open, but is not actively being investigated and there are no new leads," Beckner said. "While we believe at this point it is unlikely there will ever be a prosecution, the Boulder Police Department still holds out some hope that one day the district attorney and the Boulder Police Department will be able to put together a case worthy of presenting to a jury."

Multiple reports state that in October it was revealed that in 1999, a grand jury voted to indict John and Patsy Ramsey as the killers of JonBenet. They were supposedly charged with child abuse resulting in death and accessory to a crime. Nonetheless, then District Attorney Alex Hunter tossed the charges for no credible evidence was found to support the claim that it was the 6-year-old's parents who killed her.
