A Vail avalanche has left the grandson of the Vail ski mecca's co-founders dead and three others trapped, authorities said Tuesday, CNN reported Jan. 8.
Four people were swept by an avalanche at Vail Mountain. One of them, who was identified as the 24-year-old grandson of one of the co-founders of the ski resort unfortunately died. Meanwhile, the other three were trapped temporarily but were spared with only minor injuries documented, officials said.
Reuters reported that the 24-year-old grandson of Vail founder Pete Seibert named Anthony "Tony" Seibert died in an area known as East Vail Chutes at around 11:30 in the morning local time. He reportedly died in an area just outside the boundary of the resort, said Eagle County Coroner Kara Bettis, adding that an autopsy report is yet to be released.
"He was always an uplifting person and cheerful," close friend Scott Klumb said in his tribute video, which he posted on YouTube hours after the confirmed death of Seibert. "...He was always goofing around or getting other people excited and just making them happy."
Meanwhile, three people, who were reportedly skiing or snowboarding in the area were also swept by the Vail avalanche. They got caught in the wave of the gushing snow; hence, they got trapped temporarily. Eagle County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that the three were rescued successfully and that they are now being treated for minor injuries
A Twitter post from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center revealed that the avalanche was a large one and it happened near a tree line on a slope.
In April 2013, a similar incident happened at Colorado's Loveland Pass, 48 miles west of Denver. Five backcountry snowboarders were reportedly killed in the said incident.
Seibert's death is considered as the second Colorado fatality this winter season and is fifth nationwide, according to forecaster with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center Spencer Logan.
