Facebook, one of the front-runners and significant forces in the social media landscape, has reached and celebrates it's 10th anniversary on February 4th.

The initial purpose of Facebook, when conceived by founder Mark Zuckerberg, was to be a national student network. However, due to it's popularity amongst neighboring institutions, Facebook increasingly grew and became relevant for social networking. "The dynamic of managing people and running a business as a CEO is very different from being college roommates and spending time studying," Zuckerberg stated, writes Guardian Liberty Voice.

Facebook made it digitally possible to locate and follow the life of people from your past and also currently in your involvement. You're made aware of their story-lines. It also became a vehicle for developing new social ties to people through work associations or common interests, whether business or personal. Most recently, it has become a significant business tool for communicating with both existing and potential customers.

According to a recent November report from Business Insider, Facebook is ranked the most popular social media app on smartphones and accounts for 66 percent of total social media sharing on iPhones.

Further statistics convey the following:

• Facebook followers is 1.26 billion
• Facebook monthly active users is 1.23 billion
• Facebook daily active users is 757 million
• Daily active users in the US is 128 million
• Daily active users in the UK is 24 million
• Facebook users in China is 87 million
• The country with the most active Facebook users is Canada

The Guardian Liberty Voice also reports, Doug Anmuth, analyst at JP Morgan, thinks Facebook's mobile and video ads have been a big revenue drive. "Users are now more comfortable with video in the feed, including click-to-play ads, which we believe are doing well and will grow in the future."

There will be a celebration on the Today Show, with Zuckerberg, airing Tuesday, February 4th.
