Boxing News 2014: Freddie Roach Thinks Sergio Martinez Made A Mistake In Fighting Miguel Cotto

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach is confident about Miguel Cotto's chances in his upcoming showdown with Sergio Martinez on June 7 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.
In an interview with BoxingScene, Roach said that Martinez made a mistake in facing Cotto in his next defense of his World Boxing Council middleweight title, his second since defeating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in September 2012.
Roach pointed out that Cotto, who is coming off a third-round knockout win against Delvin Rodriguez in October last year, is one of the most disciplined fighters today.
"I think Sergio picked the wrong opponent. I cannot complain. I believe [Cotto] and Manny Pacquiao are the most disciplined fighters that exist today in boxing. I believe that I have been the 'Trainer of the Year" twice in a row because I have two talented guys," Roach said.
The 54-year-old trainer said, though, that he is expecting a tough fight against Martinez, but Roach has already mapped out a plan he thinks will be effective against a fighter like Martinez.
Roach said that they are planning to utilize Cotto's strength, which is his effective left hook and body shots, confidently saying that the Puerto Rican has the best left hook among the top fighters of today.
"This fight will be difficult," Roach said. "The body shots that Miguel throws hurt. Miguel has an amazing left hook. I honestly do not know why he didn't use it against Austin Trout. He has the best left hook to the body and that will be the key to this type of fight."
Roach recently said that they will gun for a knockout victory against Martinez, and he is convinced that Cotto's effective body shots could lead to a stoppage win.
"We have seen Martinez fights," Roach said. "I observed him closely when I was in Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's corner, and he's very fast. But like all opponents he can be outboxed. If Miguel focuses on his body, Martinez will loose his speed and that's when we will knock him out."
