Floyd Mayweather is set to return to the ring in September and his next opponent could be named soon with sources saying that the unbeaten champion's camp is considering several prospects.
Included in Mayweather's list of possible opponents is reigning WBA and WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, former champion Amir Khan, and the latest to be added on the list - Demetrius Andrade.
Andrade successfully defended his WBO junior middleweight title for the first time, scoring an impressive seventh-round knockout win over Brian Rose on Saturday at the Barclays Center.
Andrade, who improved to 21-0 with 14 knockouts, could be lined up in big-money fights after an impressive performance, which saw him flooring Rose in the first and third rounds of the bout before completely stopping his opponent in the seventh round.
Joe DeGuardia, Andrade's promoter, told RingTV that they are looking for a showdown against Mayweather along with other big-name fighters like Saul Alvarez and Miguel Cotto.
"As Demetrius has said, we're looking for the biggest and the best fights out there. 'Canelo,' Cotto, Mayweather, you name them. We're looking for the best fighters out there because we think that we've got the best fighter in the world," DeGuardia said.
Andrade expressed excitement over the possibility of facing the reigning pound-for-pound king, saying that he has the skills and perfect style to put Mayweather into a lot of trouble.
"I believe that I can beat Floyd Mayweather," Andrade said. "There's nobody out there who has a jab like me. There's nobody out there who is as fast as me and who is going to slip and slide and look as good against Floyd Mayweather."
Andrade admitted, though, that he needs a combination of effort and luck in order to land a bout against Mayweather, knowing that the Grand Rapids native is also considering facing Garcia, who is coming off a not-so-impressive win against Mauricio Herrera in March.
"Now if Mayweather wants to pick Danny Garcia, who was in with a tough little boxer like Herrera, you're talking about a situation where Mayweather is way above Herrera, so that's going to just be the same thing," Andrade said. "If Mayweather wants to retire being the best like he's saying, I think before he goes out, that he needs to fight Demetrius Andrade.
