Shakira's Facebook page likes have exceeded the 100 million likes mark, making the Colombian singer the most popular public figure on the social networking site, The Hindu has learned.
The sudden increase in number of Shakira Facebook page likes is for the most part attributed to the massive success of her song "La La La (Brazil 2014)," which was used as one of the theme songs for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, according to Variety.
The "The Voice" coach's top 20 Facebook posts that secured Shakira's Facebook page likes growing number have already drawn in 39.7 million likes. To date, her most-liked post is a photograph of her posing on the field of the Maracanã Stadium just before the final match of the World Cup. The said post raked in more than 3.5 million likes in just four days.
To give thanks to her fans for making Shakira's Facebook page likes surpass the 100-million mark on the social networking site, the "Hips Don't Lie" singer shared a video on Facebook, which quickly received more than 162,000 likes within just an hour after it was posted.
"100 million fans on Facebook. I mean that is incredible," Shakira said in the thank you-video for her quite remarkable success. "Thank you so much for your support, for your loyalty, for your love. It's really unbelievable, thank you so much."
In an email sent to The Wall Street Journal, Shakira called her 100 million Facebook likes "just an unfathomable number." The singer then added that it is something that she "never necessarily anticipated but a really welcoming and heartwarming surprise."
Jan Rezab, chief executive of the social-media metrics company Socialbakers, told The Wall Street Journal that Shakira's Facebook Page likes and international appeal, embodied by the soccer tournament, was the major factor that has boosted her notable success on the social networking site.
WSJ also noted that Shakira's social media team, which is composed of two assistants and a supervisor, posts in several languages including, English, Spanish, German, French, Russian and many others, attracting more followers from different parts of the world. The publication then quipped that this obviously is one of the reasons why Shakira's Facebook page likes skyrocketed in such a short time.
However, apart from her social media team, Shakira herself also share her own thoughts on the site. Posts that have "Shak" in them are said to be from the Colombian singer herself.
