Boxing superstars Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be facing different opponents several months from now, but the rivals might eventually cross paths in May 2015.
Boxing News Online reported that the long-dreamed super fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao could finally happen next year with sources saying that the reigning pound-for-pound king wants to make the fight happen mainly because of financial reasons.
"It has been reported on several websites that the pair will eventually collide in May 2015. Believe it when you see it is our advice, but according to the stories, a 'source close to Floyd Mayweather Sr.' has indicated Floyd Jr. wants the fight," Boxing News Online reported. "The enormous financial gain has been advertised as Mayweather's incentive, but the purse would always have been huge."
Speculations about the big-money fights have been rampant over the past several weeks after Mayweather said that he will have a "big surprise" for fight fans in May next year. The unbeaten champion gave no hint about the surprise that he was talking about, but analysts believe that it could be related to a possible fight against Pacquiao.
But for the fight to happen - or at least gets closer to becoming a reality - both fighters must emerge victorious in their respective fights later this year.
Mayweather, who holds an immaculate 46-0 record, will face Marcos Maidana in rematch on September 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The reigning WBC and WBA welterweight champion is not expected to have a walk in the park in his second showdown with Maidana, after the Argentine challenger pushed him to the limits in the first bout where Mayweather escaped with a majority decision win.
Pacquiao, on the other hand, is set to defend his WBO welterweight title against Chris Algieri on November 22 in Macau.
The Filipino boxing icon, who is coming off a unanimous decision win against Timothy Bradley in April, is expected to be an overwhelming favorite heading into fight night, but Algieri vowed to go all out as he tries to make another step to stardom.
Algieri, who is unbeaten in 20 professional fights, recently won the WBO light welterweight title after scoring a split-decision victory against Ruslan Provodnikov last month at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
