Dole Fresh Vegetables has announced the voluntary precautionary recall for their bagged salad kit products for potential Listeria risk in the United States following the recall in Canada.
The recalled Dole bagged salad kit products are Dole Italian Blend (UPC 7143000819), Fresh Selections Italian Style Blend (UPC 1111091045), Little Salad Bar Italian Salad (UPC 4149811014) and Marketside Italian Style Salad (UPC 8113102780) coded A058201A or B, with use-by date of March 12, 2014. The product code and use-by date may be found on the upper right-hand corner of the package; the UPC code is on the back of the package below the barcode.
The issue for the recall of Dole's bagged salad kit is that some products may be possibly contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Dole Fresh Vegetables is coordinating closely with regulatory officials and no sicknesses have been associated with the recalled bagged salad kit products. However, due to the time involved in tracing a foodborne illness back to a specific food product, it is impossible to say whether or not anyone has fallen sick. The precautionary recall notification is being issued due to one sample of Dole Italian salad which generated a positive result for Listeria monocytogenes in a random sample test conducted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause foodborne illness when a person ingested a contaminated food product. Indications of infection consist of fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea. Pregnant women and adults with weakened immune systems or those who posed as immune-compromised individuals may be more severely affected. Most healthy adults and children hardly become seriously ill.
The recalled Dole bagged salad kits were distributed in 15 U.S. states namely Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia as well as in three Canadian provinces namely New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec.
No other bagged salad kits are included on the recall, only the specific products that were stated above.
