Village tomato fight - an annual celebration called "Tomatina" has led to a friendly village tomato fight that left the streets in Bunol, Spain bloody red as thousands and thousands of red pulps from the fruit/berry coated the solid ground and the walls of several establishments.
According to Reno-Gazette Journal, the celebration, which takes place in a town in eastern Spain, serves as a major tourist attraction.
The village tomato fight - as what others call it - was held on Wednesday, Aug. 27, in Bunol, which is around 50 kilometers outside Valencia, and numerous trucks reportedly carried 125 tons of ripe tomatoes to the streets for nearly 22,000 participants to throw at each other.
Local reports say that because of the popularity of "Tomatina" all over the world, most of the participants this year were from abroad.
Despite its literally bloody red nature, no reports of harm or violence among the participants were recorded. Local reports maintain that revelers pretty much enjoyed their time during the hour-long morning festivities.
Historically speaking, the village tomato fight was inspired by a food fight among local children in 1945. Because the region is famous for its abundant tomatoes, local residents decided to use the red berries instead of regular food.
This year marks the second time that nonresidents were charged for joining the festival. Each nonresident participant was asked to pay 10 euros or $13 to take part in the village tomato fight, according to The Gleaner.
The payment is said to be the town's way of raising money to pay off its debts which amounts to 5.5 million euros.
Interestingly, because of the positive feedback from last year's celebration, the event this year was sold out weeks ahead.
