'Bones' fans were shocked with the surprising death of Sweets in the season 10 premier with most questioning why the producers decided to kill John Francis Daley's character.
Executive producer Stephen Nathan said that the decision to kill Sweets stemmed from Daley's upcoming commitment to the remake of the National Lampoon's Vacation, adding that they did not want to become a hindrance to Daley's opportunity to direct the film.
"We can only deal with the events that confront us and that's what we had to do in this circumstance," Nathan said via E! Online. "It's more than what is going to be good or bad for the show."
Nathan also added that the decision to kill Sweets was a hard one, knowing how well-loved the character is, but they are still hoping that their fans will understand the need to do so.
"We love John. It's always difficult and you never really know how the audience is going to respond," Nathan said. "We can only hope by treating this in a realistic way that respects the character that will also show how much we respect the audience. We did not do this in a cavalier or callous way, we tried to do it and integrate it into the show, and hopefully it makes the show better in a way."
Fans were brought to tears in the season premier especially after Sweets died on Brennan's arm after he was beaten to death by a trained killer.
"The entire situation for us was very, very painful and we tried to treat it with as much respect and truth as we possibly could," Nathan said. "Sweets and Booth and Brennan had grown so long over the past three or four years especially, that it seemed as if they were the people who should be there when he died. It really was a testament to Sweets, and to the nobility of the character."
On Thursday's episode, Booth and Brennan were seen chasing the man who killed Sweets. Booth and Brennan were seen talking about the murder with Booth promising that he will do whatever it takes to make Sweets' killer pay.
According to Buddy TV, Daisy is also set to reveal something unexpected about their baby in the upcoming episode.
"Late in the game we learn that Sweets had left behind a note. In that note he makes a reference that compels Daisy to reveal something quite unexpected about their baby. This scene reminded me of when, in "Aliens in a Spaceship", Angela is able to interpret the messages left behind by Hodgins. It's very sweet," Buddy TV noted.
