Amir Khan will reportedly face Robert Guerrero in his next fight on December 6 as part of his bid to finally land a showdown against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year.
The Manchester Evening News reported that Khan picked Guerrero, thinking that a convincing win against the welterweight contender in front of American fans could convince Mayweather that he deserves a shot.
Guerrero, who holds a 32-2 record with 18 knockouts, faced Mayweather in May last year in Las Vegas where he absorbed a lopsided unanimous decision loss.
Khan, who is coming off a dominating victory against Luis Collazo in their non-title fight in May, also considered facing Devon Alexander and Joselito Lopez before picking Guerrero for his next fight.
The fight has yet to be announced officially, but Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya recently said that the Khan-Guerrero fight will happen and that they are actually looking for a suitable venue with sources indicating that showdown could be held at the Barclays Center in New York.
"A great venue for Khan and Guerrero, and maybe where that fight belongs, would be the Barclays Center in New York," De La Hoya said. "The fans are just amazing at the Barclays Center and I believe that we can close out the year with a big fight like that at the Barclays Center in December."
Khan, who has a 29-3 record with 19 knockouts victories, almost got his dream bout against Mayweather earlier this year. He was considered as frontrunner to land a shot against the reigning pound-for-pound king before the unbeaten champion opted to face Marcos Maidana in May and in a rematch last month.
Floyd Mayweather Sr. recently said that he wants his son to face Khan in his next fight to silence the Bolton, England native, reiterating that Floyd Jr. will be too much for the former light welterweight champion.
"Amir Khan would be a good fight. Being that he's talking so much, running his mouth so much, and he once beat Maidana but they say he barely beat Maidana," Mayweather said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio. "I think Floyd will outsmart him, I don't care what shape he gets in or whatever."
