Marcos Maidana and Matthew Macklin is now a part of the growing list of fighters who are looking to get a shot against reigning World Boxing Council middleweight champion Miguel Cotto next year.
Maidana, who is coming off two straight defeats to Floyd Mayweather Jr. this year, is still confident that he will continue to get big-money fights when he makes his return to the ring.
Sebastian Cortusi, Maidana's adviser, said in an interview that the 31-year-old Argentine is still taking a rest, but he is already considering several fights for next year. Cortusi said that Maidana wants to stay at 147 pounds, but they will gladly take a fight against Cotto at 154 pounds in 2015 if given the opportunity.
"We will see next year what big fight can emerge," Cortusi said in an interview with ESPN Deportes as reported by BoxingScene. "There are several big names who could face Chino if the weight is 147 pounds, but if there is a special opportunity, 154 pounds could be considered, for example, against someone like Miguel Cotto."
Aside from Maidana, Matthew Macklin is also aching for a shot against Cotto should he win in his upcoming fight against Sebastian Heiland, which is a title eliminator for Cotto's world title.
Macklin is aware, though, that he has a long shot at this point, considering the fact that several big-name fighters have been expressing interest in challenging the Puerto Rican champion.
"If the fight captures the imagination and sells out a stadium, you can bring anyone, anywhere. That's the dream," Macklin said of facing Cotto. "Challenging Cotto in New York would be an incredible experience - to face someone of his stature there. But that's a lot of wins to put together first."
Cotto, who won the WBC middleweight title against Sergio Martinez, is also being linked to a title unification bout against WBC and IBO middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin, but GGG's trainer, Abel Sanchez, expressed doubt about Cotto's interest in facing his fighter.
"I doubt it very much that Miguel would step into the ring with Golovkin. He's talking about Canelo, he's talking about other fighters that are not even in GGG's league, but that's business and boxing has become a business so whatever is best for him business wise is what he's gonna do," Sanchez told On The Ropes Boxing Radio recently.
