Dog finds human remains - A dog in Northwest Atlanta may have helped investigators solve the case of a missing person after she found human remains and brought them home, police say.
On Tuesday, Mike Page, a man living on 600 block, John Creek Street, called the police to report that his dog found human remains.
"All of a sudden, she shows up with one on the porch. She had the bone in her mouth on the porch and she left the other one in the driveway, that's disturbing," Page said.
Atlanta police say after examining the bones in the 'dog finds human remains' incident, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office concluded that it was indeed part of a human leg.
The dog's find forced the police and a team of cadaver dogs to scour the area. After about 2 hours, the dogs reportedly led investigators to a valley next to an abandoned home where a severely decomposed human skeleton was found.
Reports indicate that the remains were so badly decomposed that detectives could not immediately tell the gender or race of the victim. However, based on initial analysis, officials say there appears to be no force or trauma associated with the remains. An investigation has been opened to determine the race of the individual and his/her cause of death.
Meanwhile, the police have praised the dog - Brix - for finding the human remains and bringing them home.
"Had we not found these initial bones out here, we wouldn't even be out here right now to find the current remains that we've located," Lt Charles Hampton , Atlanta's police homicide commander said.
He went on to say that investigators are "glad we did found the initial bones, and hopefully we can bring some type of closure to the family," of the victim.
The 'dog finds human remains' story has been widely discussed online. Dog handlers say the 'dog finds human remains' story is not as unique as it seems. Occasionally, dogs find human remains among other things they dig up while wandering.
