As Saul Alvarez and his camp begin with the negotiations for their next fight, his promoter and future Hall-of-Fame boxer Oscar De La Hoya has made a stand: all Mexican boxing dates now belong to "Canelo."
For the past few years, reigning boxing pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather has practically taken the two significant Mexican holidays - namely Cinco de Mayo and Mexico's independence day (May 5th and September 13, respectively) as the date of his fights.
But with what already seemed to be the end of the "cold war" between De La Hoya's "Golden Boy Promotions" and Bob Arum's "Top Rank Promotions", it seems like Alvarez would be having the leverage in terms of claiming the said dates.
With Alvarez possibly fighting current WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto next, it would be more apt to have May 2nd as the next fight date. In a report by boxngscene.com through ESPN Deportes, De La Hoya asserts that if Mayweather would want to stake his claim at the same weekend in May, he would have to make some changes and move his fight to either April or June.
But of course, since they will be going up against boxing's current king, all negotiations must be ironed out first.
"The good thing is that we started the talks," De La Hoya said. "I'll be talking to Bob Arum in the next two days, we will sit down and hopefully this fight is done. First we must finalize the details of business of the fight, then grabbed the date of May 2."
Alvarez (44-1-1, with 31 victories by knockout) last saw action in twelve-round non-title bout against Cuba's Erislandy Lara, wherein he emerged victorious by split decision. The only loss in his career was in the hands of Floyd Mayweather when the two met in September 2013.
While he is considered to be the "next big money star" as far as boxing is concerned, Canelo's claiming of the said dates may be tougher, considering that he is contending with the biggest money star in boxing.
That being said, unless the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight will be scheduled on May 2nd, then maybe he has a good chance of fighting in Cinco de Mayo weekend.
