Tom Brokaw Cancer Remission - NBC's legendary news correspondent Tom Brokaw has announced that a cancer he has been battling for at least a year is in full remission.
"A year ago my future was more uncertain that I cared to acknowledge but now I face the New Year with very encouraging news," Tom Brokaw wrote in a statement to NBC staff on Sunday.
"Last weekend I was reminded of how fortunate we all are and whatever challenges I faced were footnotes compared to the men I was with."
He added that he would be facing the New Year with high expectations following the encouraging news of his health. Brokaw also revealed that he will soon undergo a drug maintenance treatment that will keep the cancer cells in remission.
"The cancer is in remission and I will shortly go on a drug maintenance regimen to keep it there," he said.
Reports indicate that in August 2013, the74-year-old former NBC Nightly News anchor was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (a form of cancer that affects the blood in the bone marrow). However, Brokaw only revealed this six months later - in February. He said he was undergoing chemotherapy.
In November, Tom Brokaw who now serves as a Special Correspondent for NBC News and has continued to work through his cancer treatment was awarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
