Disney's latest movie "Into the Woods" had a strong opening with $1.1 million, Variety reported.
The movie musical "Into the Woods" earned $1.1 million on Christmas Eve in North America. Box office trackers predict that the film will gain $26 million to $29 million on weekend domestic sales.
"Into the Woods" is a movie adaptation of several fairy tales from the Grimm Brothers. The film is based on the 1986 Stephen Sondheim musical.
A witch played by Meryl Streep curses the house of a baker played by James Corden and his wife portrayed by Emily Blunt. The curse keeps the couple from having a child so the witch can manipulate them as she desires, Screen Rant reported.
The witch sets the couple into a journey to find the items that would break the spell that stole her youth and beauty. A cow as white as milk, cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold are the items they need to find to break the curse.
The baker and his wife explore the forest in search for the items and discover the fairy tale characters in their own adventures. Cinderella played by Anna Kendrick, Little Red Riding Hood portrayed by Lila Crawford and Rapunzel played by Mackenzie Mauzy are the female characters they encounter.
Jack played by Daniel Huttlestone and princes portrayed by Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen respectively are also in the story. Johnny Depp as the Big Bad Wolf delivers the creepiness expected from an iconic fairy tale villain.
The twists and turns of the entangled lives of the popular fairy tale characters make "Into the Woods" exciting. Since there are several main characters in the story, it tells a confusing but amusing tale. There is a lot of fantasy as expected but the songs are forgettable, according to The Star.
"Into the Woods" now in 2,440 theatres is directed by "Chicago" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" director Rob Marshall.
