Trey Rich Killed - A senior wide receiver for Belhaven University was killed on Christmas eve after his bicycle was struck from behind by a pickup truck on a highway in Richland, MS.
Trey Rich, 26, had reportedly closed from work at a local FedEx branch and was heading back to his dormitory when his bicycle was hit from behind by a driver on Old Highway 49. Reports indicate that the accident happened around 6:15 p.m. Trey Rich was pronounced dead shortly after paramedics arrived at the site of the crash.
Richland Police have identified the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash that killed Trey Rich as 29-year-old Reginald Davis.
"The driver went another 200-300 yards out of control and crashed into another truck," Richmond Police Chief Russel James said.
Davis is suspected to have been drinking on the night. But the police are yet to confirm this. He was transported to the Mississippi Medical Center after the crash and is reported to be in good condition.
Belhaven University coaches have revealed that Rich, who is from Memphis, was an exceptional player who took both football and academics seriously.
"He played every play like it was his last, he practiced hard, he was always positive and upbeat. Even when things weren't going his way, he wasn't down on himself. He would work to pick up the other guys," coach Gene Hudson said. "Trey was one of those kids you'd want on your team regardless of talent, because his attitude was so infectious about doing things the right way. He was just a high character kid."
Hudson said despite many disappointments, Rich was working hard at fulfilling his dream of getting a chance to try out for the NFL. "At 26, some people would quit, but Trey wasn't going to give up," Hudson said.
"Trey was a well-respected young man among teammates and across campus, and we ask for prayers for his family and friends during this difficult time," Belhaven University Vice President for Athletics Scott Little said.
