Jerry Lee Lewis - A legendary Rock and Roll musician, known for pioneering the genre's wild edge, has auctioned off his 1959 Harley-Davidson for $385,000.
According to reports, 79-year-old Jerry Lee Lewis known as the 'The Killer,' was present at the auctioning of his prized 1959 Harley-Davidson at an event held in Florida on Saturday.
$385,000 may seem like a lot of money to spend on an old motorbike and analysts say Lewis's Harley ranks in the top 20 of the most expensive bikes sold at an auction.
The record was set just last year - in October a red-white-and blue custom Harley-Davidson sold for #1.35 million. The motorbike auctioned was indeed special; it was the ridden by Peter Fonda in the 1969 classic movie Easy Rider. A 1910 Winchester holds the record for the second most expensive motorbike sold at an auction, and it went for $580,000.
Jerry Lee Lewis, who is widely remembered as Rock and Roll's original wild man, has had a passion for motorbike for the past 60 years.
Reports indicate that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee was given the 1959 Harley- Davidson as a gift when it was still brand new. And his enthusiasm and care for the bike is self evident as the 1959 Harley-Davidson was still looking new during the auction.
Jerry Lee Lewis has only rode the bike for just over 2000 miles despite owning it for 55 years. He says it's the jewel in his collection and was like a child to him.
"There was a time I wouldn't take a zillion for it, but now it's just sitting there," Lewis said. "You can crank that motorcycle up and she purrs like a kitten--but you have to kickstart it you know. I could probably sit on it alright today. But I wouldn't take a chance. I'm 79 years old, This bike is like a child to me, but I've decided it's time to let it go."
