Gold Nuggets Stolen San Francisco - Three masked robbers drove and SUV into a Wells Fargo History Museum in downtown San Francisco in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, before getting away with 4 to 10 ounces of gold valued at about $10,000.
San Francisco Police say they were notified of the incident at about 2:30 a.m., but the suspects, who held the museum security guard at gun point, had already fled by the time the cops arrived.
The Wells Fargo History Museum that was robbed is one of 10 similar centers across the country, where the company displays historic memorabilia that have featured in its history. The San Francisco Wells Fargo museum that was robbed contains an authentic 1960's stagecoach, as well as a working telegraph, gold nuggets from California, an archaic gold scale and several works of art. The building where the museum is stationed is reportedly an old office that was used by the company in the 19th century.
Reports indicate that the suspects, who were wearing ski masks, smashed through the glass wall of the museum with a GMC SUV vehicle, before carrying out their larcenist plot. They then escaped in another silver sedan that was parked outside. Security experts say the robbers seem to have known precisely what they were aiming for before staging the robbery.
Ruben Pulido, a spokesman for Well Fargo, has denounced the robbery saying that the company is "disturbed" about the robbery of its history museum. Nonetheless, he noted that the historic stagecoaches on display weren't damaged and that the museum will be reopened as scheduled.
Local police have opened an investigation into the incident. Reports indicate that there have been several similar robberies in the Bay Area. The police have revealed that the SUV used by the robbers to smash through the glass walls of the museum is a stolen vehicle.
