Afton Elaine Burton - After all, there may be no weeding bells for convicted mass murderer Charles Manson as his marriage license with a 26-year-old woman, who believes in his innocence, is set to expire.
According to reports from the California department of corrections and rehabilitation, the weekend scheduled for inmates to receive visitors has passed without the odd couple getting married.
Jeffrey Callison, spokesman for the department, says the marriage license obtained in November 2014 by Afton Elaine Burton and 80-year-old Manson is set to expire on Thursday.
It lasts for 90 days - making this weekend the last chance the couple may have to get married in the state facility.
If they are really going to get married in visiting room of the California state prison located in Corcoran, they must first register for a new Kings County marriage license.
The news of Charles Manson and Afton Elaine Burton's relationship and plans to get married went viral late last year. Manson became infamous as the leader of a 1969 group of young killers, who targeted Hollywood actors and tried to make their gruesome murders look like the actions of the Black Panthers.
Manson was later convicted for killing seven people including heavily pregnant actress Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski.
But despite these accusations, Afton Elaine Burton believes in Manson's innocence. She runs a website that advocates his claims of innocence. Burton, who is also called 'Star,' first heard about Manson after reading an article about him. She subsequently left her family, traveling halfway across the country to live near the California prison where he is serving a life sentence. She has been living there for nine years.
Although she has not yet released a statement regarding the expiration of her marriage license, which she was very upbeat about, James McGrath, a New York City Photo agency editor, said he is in contact with her and claims she plans on applying for another 90-day license.
"Y'all can know that it's true," Burton told AP in November after obtaining her first license. "It's going to happen."
Charles Manson is eligible for parole in 2027 - his followers Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwinke, Charles 'Tex' Watson, Bruce Davis and Robert Beausoleil remain imprisoned. Beausoleil is scheduled for a parole hearing on 19 February.
One of his followers Susan Atkins died of cancer while in prison.
