Sarah Hudek Baseball Scholarship - The daughter of former Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star pitcher John Hudek has made history on Wednesday after becoming one of the first females to sign up to play baseball at collegiate level.
On Wednesday evening, Sarah Hudek signed her letter of intent to play college baseball. The teenager shared the news on her Twitter page.
"It's only the beginning," she wrote."People will always have something to say negative about my aspirations on the field but no one's comments will change my love for this game."
Reports indicate that Hudek received a scholarship to play baseball the Bossier Parish Community College in Louisiana.
The coach of the BPCC baseball team Aaron Vorachek has explained that signing Hudek is not a ploy to get some media attention. Hudek is 5-foot-10, 150 lbs and pitches at about 82 mph with her left hand.
According to Vorachek, that makes her as good as or even better than some of the boys on his team.
"I saw Sarah pitch as a sophomore and then again last season. She can really pitch," he said."I think other schools were afraid to take a chance on her. But you're taking a chance with every kid you sign."
Sarah Hudek told Shreveport Times that she is "excited" to join the BPCC baseball team. She noted that coach Vorachek sees her "as a player who can help his team and not just a girl."
"He has accepted me as a player," she said.
As for her new teammates, Hudek says hopes the boys see her as a player and not just another girl. Reports indicate that Sarah Hudek has been playing baseball with males since Little League.
She says she has learnt a lot from her dad and other professional baseball players. "I have a fastball, change-up, curve and I'm working on a cutter," she said.
