‘Jupiter Ascending’: An Epic Sci-Fi Misfire? Critics Praise Film’s Outrageously Stunning Visual Spectacle But Slam Narrative Weakness

"Jupiter Ascending" is a big-budget fantasy film that is set to be released in IMAX 3D this weekend. It is written, produced and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski. Though the movie was praised for its outrageously stunning visual effects, it fell short in the narrative category.

"Jupiter Ascending" will be one of the three major movie releases this weekend. The film features actors Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, Tuppence Middleton and Terry Gilliam. Though the film, which will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, was delayed several times, it finally premiered on Feb. 6.

Last Jan. 27, 2015, "Jupiter Ascending" made a surprise debut at the Sundance Film Festival. While it was applauded for its visual accomplishment, The Verge revealed the film was highly criticized for its narrative weakness.

Based on the movie's plot, it depicts the tale of Jupiter Jones (Kunis), a woman who does janitorial work for a living. But her destiny changes when Caine Wise (Tatum), a genetically engineered interplanetary warrior, informed her fate extends beyond Earth. Jupiter then discovered she's a genetic reincarnation of the queen of the universe.

Upon reading the plot of the story, the pure sci-fi fantasy film is quite interesting, but, critics said it's a narrative misfire. In a movie review by the Wired, though "Jupiter Ascending" is a big, beautiful space movie, viewers will already know the happenings on the film without even watching the trailer.

"The script is uneven, the editing is weird, the performances are weirder, and, for added measure, it all lacks focus," the review pointed out. While The Atlantic said, "Wachowskis' $175 million space opera is an utter mess."

Even though "Jupiter Ascending" received praises for its remarkably stunning visuals and originality, the story was gravely criticized after earning "generally negative reviews" from several movie critics.

"Pleasing to the eye but narratively befuddled, Jupiter Ascending delivers another visually thrilling misfire from the Wachowskis," Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads.

Despite "Jupiter Ascending's" negative reviews, many critics still urged movie goers to watch the film. Do you think the movie is an epic sci-fi misfire? For a sneak peek, watch the movie trailers below.
