Afton Elaine Burton - The 26-year-old fiancée of convicted murderer Charles Manson only wanted to marry him so that she could have legal rights over his corpse when he died and display it in a glass coffin as a public attraction.
Florida-based journalist and biographer Daniel Simone, who reportedly interviewed Charles Manson extensively, made this revelation to the New York Post. According to Simone, Afton Elaine Burton was working on the plan along with her friend Craig Hammond.
The relationship between 80-year-old Manson and the young girl made the headlines late last year after the couple was granted a marriage license by Kings County authorities. But the license expired without being used this past weekend.
While Burton has revealed that the marriage will go on as planned, Simone says Manson doesn't want to go ahead with the marriage anymore. "He's finally realized that he's been played for a fool."
Simone also revealed that Manson thinks the plan is "stupid" because he is immortal. He also noted that Manson claims to have played along with the marriage in order to get presents during visitation.
Manson, who is serving a death penalty at the Corcoran State Prison, has been incarcerated since the seventies. He was charged for several heinous crimes, including murder, which he tried to pin on the Black Panthers.
Afton Elaine Burton, who moved to Corcoran to be near Manson at the age of 19, told the press last year that she is in love with him. She even described herself as his 'wife' and claims to believe in his innocence. She has reportedly been running a campaign to secure his release.
While she had hinted that her marriage to Manson was in a bid to help his case saying "There's certain things next of kin can do," reports indicate that prior to applying for the marriage license with Manson, Burton had unsuccessfully tried to lay claim to his corpse.
