Victor Martinez Surgery - The Detroit Tigers have announced that injured designated hitter Victor Martinez will be ready to start the 2015 season after he underwent knee surgery.
The team announced the good news on Tuesday following the slugger's successful surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus.
"Probably as good of news as I could've hoped for," manager Brad Ausmus said. "Better than I was expecting."
36-year-old Martinez became injured two weeks ago while participating in off season workouts. The Tigers feared the worst, that he would be sidelined for months due to the knock.
"We are very happy the surgery went well and that Victor will be ready to compete for the start of the 2015 season," Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a statement.
According to reports, Victor Martinez's surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida. The player is expected to begin rehab immediately after and is scheduled to return fully to the game in 4-6 weeks.
"Vic was in great shape prior to the surgery. That should really bode well for his rehab," said Tigers head trainer Kevin Rand.
The team wants to be sure that Victor Martinez is a 100 percent before he is allowed to return to the pitch following his surgery.
"We've gotta be smart about this," Ausmus said. "We want Victor for the extreme bulk of the season, as opposed to making sure he plays in the very first game."
Venezuelan born Martinez, who is ambidextrous, signed a four-year $68 million contract in November and is a crucial part of the Tiger's team.
In the 2014 season, he recorded 335 hits with 32 home runs and 193 RBIs. He also came second in the American League MVP award.
