Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Indicted - Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been indicted on charges related to the shooting, which led to the death of Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer Sean Collier, three days after the fatal April 2013 attacks.
A Massachusetts district attorney has revealed plans to prosecute Tsarnaev for Collier's murder after his current federal trial ends. The charges were announced a day after forensics experts testified in Tsarnaev's trial that they identified Collier's blood on a pair of white gloves found in the driver's seat floorboard of the suspect's Honda Accord.
The car, which was abandoned on a street in Watertown, Mass., was found after a shootout between authorities and the suspects days after the bombing that killed 3 people and left more than 260 wounded.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan announced that a local grand jury had indicted Dzhokhar Tsarnaev for Collier's murder.
"We intend to move forward with criminal charges against Tsarnaev after the current federal trial is completed," Ryan said in a statement.
Reports from federal prosecutors say Tsarnaev and his deceased older brother Tamerlan shot and killed Collier on April 18,2003, following a failed attempt to steal his gun while they were on the run from police after the bombing.
Collier was ambushed by the brothers while he sat in his police cruiser on the MIT campus a few hours after the FBI had released pictures of the Tsarnaev brothers identifying them as the suspects of the Boston Marathon bombing.
Sean Collier was shot six times, including three times in the head at close range. However, authorities are not sure if it was Tsarnaev or his brother who pulled the trigger.
The defense team for the 21-year-old, who is facing a 30-count federal indictment in connection with the bombing and the manhunt that ensued, are saying that it was Tamerlan who shot and killed Collier. They also say Tsarnaev was being influenced by his older brother who masterminded the attacks.
Reports reveal that a few hours after Collier's murder, on April 19, Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police, while Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was arrested after being found hiding in a backyard boat.
