Sabra Hummus Recall - A voluntary and nationwide effort was made by Sabra Dipping Company, LLC to recall its famous dipping products after it was found that several samples of its hummus were potentially contaminated with a lethal type of bacteria called Listeria.
According to Detroit Free Press, the presence of Listeria in a number of hummus samples prompted the Sabra Hummus Recall 2015 nationwide.
Through a routine inspection on March 30, inspectors with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development detected the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in the samples of Sabra hummus.
Upon obtaining the result of the inspection a few days later Michigan officials immediately informed inspectors in Virginia, as well as U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials, to work with Sabra in recalling its products.
Inspectors said the recall is only limited to five stock unit or Classic Hummus since no other products of Sabra were affected by the contamination.
Meanwhile, federal authorities have linked the contamination to three recorded deaths and five documented illnesses in Texas and Kansas, reports New York Times.
Thus far, the Sabra Hummus Recall has retrieved 30,000 cases of Classic Hummus.
On the FDA's official website, authorities listed the specific products that are being retrieved through the Sabra Hummus Recall 2015.
The items being recalled are: Sabra Classic Hummus 10 oz, Sabra Classic Hummus 30 oz, Sabra Classic Hummus without Garnish 32 oz, Sabra Classic Hummus 17 oz Six Pack and Hummus Dual Pack Classic/Garlic 23.5 oz.
All of the products affected have been distributed in the U.S. only.
The FDA is advising consumers to dispose or return any of these products for refunds.
Listeria is considered as one of the most dangerous food-borne illness-causing bacteria. It specifically weakens the immune system and it is said to be not so common unlike salmonella.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claims almost 260 people die of Listeria each year.
