Angelina Jolie-Pitt Helps Son Maddox Embrace Cambodia Heritage Through Upcoming Film — 'He Is My Son, But He Is Also A Son of Cambodia'

The 40-year-old Oscar Winner Angelina Jolie-Pitt is eager to film her upcoming Netflix movie "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers" in Cambodia where her son, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, was born. This is because the "Maleficent" star wants her son to understand his heritage more.

According to Philly.com, Angelina has signed on to direct a Netflix film set in Cambodia, based on author and human rights activist Loung Ung's 2000 memoir. "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remember," like the book, will be about surviving the deadly Khmer regime. Khmer Rouge assumed power over Cambodia in 1975, and began a four-year reign in which nearly two million Cambodia died.

Angelina also told Associated Press that one of her goals is to help her ten son remember where he came from as Maddox assists her in the project.

She told Yahoo Celebrity: "Maddox will be on set every day after school and he will be involved behind the scenes. As Maddox and I prepare the film, we will be side by side learning about his country. He is turning 14 next week and this is a very important time for him to understand who he is. He is my son but he is also a son of Cambodia. This is the time for our family to understand all that that means to him and to us."

Angelina desires to tell the story in the most truthful and accurate way. She doesn't want this project to revisit the horrors of the war but to help other people to learn about Cambodia.

For her, this film would be a great learning experience not only for her but also for Maddox.

In related news, ET has learned last May 2014, that Jolie revealed to them that Maddox had a girlfriend. Angelina even described her as a lovely and great lady who lives in England.

As expected, Maddox's parents Angelina and Brad were very supportive of the young love. "We go there as often as possible. It's really, really sweet. She's a great lady, so I'm lucky. So far, we're doing good," Jolie said at the time.
