Kim Kardashian isn't the only psoriasis-stricken celeb. Singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper is also struggling with this skin condition. In fact, the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" hitmaker has been trying to conceal her disease by dressing up in a manner that will only show little skin.
According to Inquisitr, Lauper wears turtle-necks and other skin-concealing clothes to hide her skin condition. Speaking of the autoimmune disease she is suffering from, Lauper admitted that she feels embarrassed most of the time due to the physical manifestations. The 62-year-old singer even compares her skin to that of Elephant Man.
"It was so bad, I felt like the Elephant Man," Lauper said. "My whole entire body was covered in a rash and scaly skin. And then it just stared creeping up my neck. I felt swallowed by it. My immune system got a little wacky, and it took my strength away. My skin was so inflamed, it could not regulate hot and cold, so I had the chills all the time."
Lauper admitted that the skin condition even stole her drive to perform, noting that she got depressed for some time.
"I lost it. I stopped singing for a while. I felt depressed and I felt horrible."
However, she has now overcome the negative effects of her condition and is now even open to helping other patients understand what the skin condition is all about.
"You don't have to suffer in silence or live in pain. It's not just a rash. It's a disease," she was quoted as saying by Inquisitr.
According to Lauper, what simply started as a simple irritation on her scalp 5 years ago turned out to be the disease of psoriasis.
To better spread psoriasis awareness, Lauper has partnered with Novartis and the National Psoriasis Foundation for the "More To Psoriasis" information campaign.
Lauper's tip to other psoriasis patients: "There are 7.5 million Americans with this. Find a doctor who specializes in psoriasis and find a treatment. The campaign is called 'I'm PsO ready.' Find what works for you. You gotta keep going, because if not, you'll end up on your butt like I was."
She went on to say, "You can't just lay in the dark and get depressed and feel like the disease has won. You can win, just get the information and get help - because suffering in silence really sucks.
Like Lauper, Kim Kardashian is now more open about her struggle with psoriasis than before, according to Hollywood Life.
Her skin condition didn't even stop her from flaunting her curvaceous body on TV and on magazine covers, most especially when she posed nude for Paper magazine.
In February, Kim revealed to IntoTheGloss.com her means of combating the physical manifestations of psoriasis, saying, "I have this at-home LED light therapy machine called Quasar MD Plus that I got it for my psoriasis because I'll try anything."
Kanye West's wife even revealed at the time that she had this "crazy" experience during a shoot because of her skin condition.
"I used to have it so bad on the back of my legs. I had a lingerie photoshoot once, and it was just covering my legs. I have the behind-the-scenes pictures, and it's pretty crazy," she said.
Nevertheless, Kardashian is now more thankful that her condition has started to become manageable. "Now I just have two patches that won't seem to go away, but the rest have gone away ever since I had [North West]," she was quoted as saying by Hollywood Life.
Other Hollywood names who are also suffering from the autoimmune disease include Grammy-winning singer LeAnn Rimes, "Saturday Night Live" alum Jon Lovitz, "Leave It to Beaver" star Jerry Mathers, "What Not to Wear" co-host Stacy London, one half of Simon & Garfunkel Art Garfunkel and "America's Next Top Model" Cycle 7 winner CariDee English, according to Everyday Health.
