"True Detective" Season 2 finale aired last Sunday and the result was catastrophic and bleak for two of the main characters.
Warning spoilers ahead!
Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell's characters Frank and Ray respectively bites the dust.
According to The Independent, Frank, in a bid to take out Osip and McCandless, failed to anticipate the loose end — the Mexican drug dealers — which led to his death in the desert. Despite bartering the $1 million he has in his suitcase for his life, they wanted his suit. And because he refused to part with the demanded suit, Frank was stabbed in the gut and left to bleed and wander in the desert while hallucinating about his father. So, why was he unwilling to let go of a piece of clothing, you ask? Well, because there were diamonds inside.
On the other hand, Ray committed an err of trying to get a glimpse of his son, thereby giving Burris ample time to place a tracker on his vehicle. They chased him down in a forest and a gunfight ensued leaving Ray in the midst of a hail of bullets.
The only survivor was Rachel McAdams' character Ani, who safely reached Venezuela and met with Jordan.
Viewers were not so kind as to their reactions regarding the whole of "True Detective" Season 2. Some were displeased and sarcastic in their comments.
According to Vanity Fair, there were a lot of blunder and questionable moments in the HBO anthology such as the ghost of Frank's offensive father confronting him in the desert while he was suffering from blood loss and his controversial use of the diamonds that he had in his suit to stop the flow of blood coming from the fatal stab wound inflicted by the Mexican drug dealers.
The part that further brought "True Detective" Season 2 down was its inconsistency. In the finale episode, it was deemed that the inconsistency arose from the show not pinpointing its most important asset - Rachel McAdams' Ani.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, with the demise of Frank and Ray, the show cuts to a year-plus later in Venezuela, Ani outlines the story for a reporter and viewers get a glimpse that the huge corruption she and her comrades fought against remained unchecked. Orgy promoter Tony Chessani became mayor of Vinci with Burris by his side; new Gov. Geldof drove a ceremonial spike on the rail border with Catalyst logos above and behind him. Ani and Ray's encounter produced a baby, which she, Frank's devoted ruffian Nails and Jordan took turns in raising.
There's no update yet if HBO and Nic Pizzolatto will have a third season.
