McDonald's Big Mac sauce went for £65,900 or $96,000 on Wednesday (Feb 10) after a two week bidding frenzy on eBay. Meanwhile, the product of the auction was sold in Australia for $4.99 each.
The sauce isn't normally sold separately. The starting bid was £3, which is about $4.33.
The sauce was auctioned off to celebrate McDonald's 50th birthday.
The buyer of the sauce on eBay's auction gets the 740 ml bottle in a special collector's box, with a shiny sauce dispenser that looks like a caulk gun - in a sleek black box. They will also be sent the sauce by refrigerated courier by the fast food chain McDonald's. This is only for residents of mainland UK and Northern Ireland.
Also included will be a voucher for a free burger.
The eBay listing of the sauce auction claims this is the firm time the McDonald's Big Mac sauce is for sale publicly in the UK.
Proceeds from the sale of the McDonald's Big Mac sauce will go to McDonald's charity, even though, according to The Sun, McDonald's is still trying to conform if the listing was genuine.
According to the nutrition facts that bottle has almost 1,850 calories. Its ingredients are reportedly water, rapeseed oil, spirit vinegar, gherkin, sugar, modified starch, free range egg yolk, spices (contains mustard), salt, glucose-fructose syrup, xanthan gum, natural flavorings, calcium chloride, paprika extract, potassium sorbate.
Meanwhile, the Australians seemed to get the same thing at the bargain of a lifetime. McDonald's in Australia released a limited-edition of the sauce in bottles, News.com.au reported.
McDonald's Australia sold only 4,000 of the bottles in 40 of its outlets at $4.99 each. Predictably, the bottles sold out in 15 minutes after going on sale at midnight on Saturday, Jan 23. Soon after, bottles appeared on Gumtree for up to $100 as entrepreneurs tried to benefit from the opportunity.
