Not even a bunch of gods could take down the monster momentum of the "mercenary with a Mouth".
Deadpool has collected $246.5M and is expected to clear $300M during the first weekend in March.
According to comScore estimates on Sunday, Marvel's anti-hero blockbuster Deadpool continued to dominate North American movie theatres over the weekend, earning an estimated $31.5m in its third week.
"Deadpool" should pick up another $31 million this weekend from 3,856 locations. Fox's R-rated Ryan Reynolds Marvel hit movie took in $9 million on Friday, about double of "Gods of Egypt's" Friday take. This is "Deadpool's" third straight weekend at No. 1. The unique Marvel installment shattered expectations when it generated $132 million in its opening frame, setting a new record for largest debut for an R-rated film. Its domestic cume ought to cross $280 million by Sunday night.
Of the three wide entries, Lionsgate's $140M Gerard Butler spectacle Gods of Egypt should cash in between $12M-$15M at an estimated 3,100 runs. After dropping a trailer back in the fall, the film promptly was slammed on the web for its whitewashed cast, prompting Lionsgate and director Alex Proyas to issue apologies.
"Gods of Egypt" has been caught in a cycle of bad publicity for months, starting with complaints that the movie's largely white cast was not reflective of the population of ancient Egypt, all the way through overwhelmingly negative reviews. Most in Hollywood, including at Lions Gate, foresaw a soft box office performance.
"Much like the hero in the movie, Deadpool just keeps dispatching its competition week after week," says comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "Studios have woken up to the fact that you can have a big hit in any month of the year."People will come out in droves if you have the right movie. The movie makes the date now; the date doesn't make the movie. It's a paradigm shift a long time in coming."
