The 2016 Geneva Motor Show officially opened its doors to the public today. The showcase of supercars will run until March 13. This year marks the 86th anniversary of Europe's flagship auto show.
Analyst Tim Urquhart, from IHS, believes this year's show will be less about themes, and more about "the European industry taking care of business, coming up with compelling product that will bring buyers into showrooms and maintain the current positive sales trend."
True enough, high-performance supercars are being displayed, including Lamborghini Centenario (TRIVIA: named after founder Ferruccio Lamborghini who will turn 100 this year). Bugatti also unveiled the world's fastest road car that is worth 2.4 million euro ($2.6 million). The Chiron is equipped with a 1,500 horsepower engine that can hit 420 kilometers per hour.
The Lamborghini and Bugatti are just two of the at least 120 new models from several manufacturers that joined the motor show in Switzerland. The motor show is dominated not only by high-performance new models but also by more sensible small SUVs, including Audi's Q2, Seat's Ateca, Peugeot's 2008, and Toyota's CH-R.
There are also new additions to the auto show. Maserati joined this year with their Levante. The Levante is "an SUV crossover that offers powerful 350-horsepower and 430-horsepower engines and a silhouette that stands out due its sharply tapered back window," IBTimes reports.
BBC reports that this year's show is being attended by the host countries' companies. It took several years of suffering from the near-death of several companies before the auto industry made its way back to the top.
European Automobile Manufacturers Association believes that although the "European car sales last year were 14.2 million, 9.2% higher than in 2014, still below levels before the economic crisis, 2016 has got off to a good start, with sales up 6.3% in January year-on-year."
Telegraph has made a timeline of the happenings during the first day of the motor show. Check out the latest updates.\\\\
