When you're trying to expand your connections outside and inside work, the saying "It's not what you know, it's who you know" can be a valuable note. Networking is important for any professional. It builds relationships and recognizes competition, too.
But building that vast network of friends, peers, mentors and family members can be overwhelming for those new to the networking game. Which is why Career Girl has built up some tips that can help any professional make friends during networking events:
1. Be Yourself: This sounds like a cliche but this is an essential truth. It's easy to lose yourself in order to get that connection. A tip is to make networking a social event rather than a work chore. You'll find it easier to navigate just socializing. You'll also open up more compared to pushing and forcing yourself to get out there.
2. Follow Up and Make Contact: After making that first contact, make sure you keep connected. Send a text or an email. Stay engaged by talking to them on the phone. Creating that personal relationship will lead to a better working (or networking) relationship.
3. Compliment Them: It's difficult to engage with people sometimes. The first contact can be excruciatingly painful and awkward if not done correctly. Which is why complimenting is a great way to start. Saying "Ooh I love your bag" can open up a conversation. It's a light conversation that can lead to the next phase of your networking relationship.
4. Accept Invitations: People will want to invite you to other events. It's a way to stay connected and engaged. Remember to take yourself out of that comfort zone and follow up invitations from people you don't really know who are in the business as its the best way to make new friends and connections. Go to events with an open mind and you may even enjoy yourself.
