Employee wellness is important not only for workers but for employers as well. Having a healthier workforce will ensure a more productive and happier business.
The Obama administration has recently issued rules for employee wellness plans, according to CNBC. The new guidelines now balance employers' efforts to reward employees for improving their health conditions and regulations regarding health privacy.
Inc. shared six tips to improve employee wellness in the workplace. While some may think that a program will be costly, it doesn't have to be that way. The guide is in place to make sure that business owners create a safe and healthy workplace and, at the same time, give you the most value for your money.
1. Invest in Insurance and Preventative Care
Find out about group health insurance for your employees and check which one would be the best for your business. Preventative care such as vaccinations can also largely benefit your workforce.
2. Encourage Exercise
Still one of the best ways to keep illness at bay, exercise boosts one's mind and body. Try organizing exercise clubs for your employees. Also, consider having a walking meeting in the park instead of the boardroom.
3. Set Up Training and Education Programs
Inspire your employees to keep on improving personally and professionally. Help them become their best selves with training and education programs such as lectures and classes.
4. Have a Doctor in the Office
A workplace doctor is a professional who comes in the office once or twice a week to talk to employees regarding their health. This way, your team can discuss their health to a trained professional who can give accurate advice and guidance. Some employees may not want to let their employer know certain things that have affected their work performance due to health issues. For example, an employee who suspects they are hard of hearing and in need of hearing aids, could discuss with the Office Doctor who could refer to an audiologist or recommend the best hearing aids for the employee.
5. Reward Employees for Healthy Habits
Provide incentives for your employees who develop healthy habits. This may mean investing in the short-term but will definitely reap good returns in the long-term with more productivity and lesser sick days.
6. Implement Healthy Alternatives
Employers can provide free lunch as an added benefit for workers. Make sure to provide healthier meals that are in line with your company's budget.
Foster a healthy workplace. As a result, you will see a boost in your employees' productivity.
