The long-running animated show, "The Simpsons" has always been hit with rumors of finally getting canceled. But this latest rumor has a credible source that may very well be the curtain call for the beloved sitcom.
"The Simpsons" have been TV royalty for quite some time now. After appearing in a skit on the "Tracey Ullman Show", the iconic yellow family was given their own show on the FOX network in 1989. And when "The Simpsons" was first aired, it marked a moment wherein television was never the same again.
That was nearly 28 years and over 600 episodes ago. The show which was a cultural phenomenon, especially during the 90's, has taken a massive dip regarding ratings and quality. The show's earliest seasons were considered a stroke of genius as it took satire and parody to an entirely new level. Just watch any comedy show today, and "The Simpson" effect is still evident in them.
But it may come to no surprise that the show has been on a downward slip after every year it remained on the air. Sure, there are still golden gags and moments here and there. But it just was not the same show it was twenty years ago. And it definitely showed on the ratings; during the show's heyday, the viewers averaged by at least 20 million. In the last season, they barely managed to get 4 million viewers.
When showrunner Al Jean was asked about the show's end, he replied:
"It's quite possible that we don't have to go through the whole negotiation for 30. I wouldn't be stunned if we stopped at 28 but my bet is on at least 30. But then you'd have to resign them again."
Straight from the horse's mouth; we might only have two more seasons of "The Simpsons."
When asked how it will end, Jean continued:
"I had an idea, I thought it'd be cool if the last episode ended with them getting ready for the Christmas pageant that appeared in the first episode, so that the whole series was a loop that didn't have a beginning or end."
A fitting ending for such an iconic and enduring show.
